Situated in the capital city of Gandhinagar, which lies close to Ahmedabad, Akshardham temple is a unique cultural complex built in memory of Lord Swaminarayan. This magnificent temple was built on the instructions of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the saintly leader of BAPS Sanstha. The compound of this temple is the largest in Gujarat. Inaugurated in the year 1992, Akshardham temple has become a major tourist attraction in India, during the last decade.

Spread in area of 23 acre and is chiseled out in pink sandstone, temple stands tall with a height of 108 feet in which 6000 tones of stone were used in its creation. The special feature of this wonderful temple that is- it has built according to the Vaastu Shastra (architectural treatise) and not even an inch of steel has been used. The main temple contains a 1.2 ton gold plated statue of Lord Swaminarayan. This 7 feet high statue is built in a sitting posture, where the right hand is raised in abhay mudra. This statue is accompanied by two other idols both sides - Swami Gunatitanand is on his right and Swami Gopalanand on his left those are his followers.

Visitors can enjoy special light and sound show here organized by temple administration. The show portrays the wonderful past of Sanatan Dharam. Every year many visitors come to Akshardham Temple of Gujarat and get enlighten with Hindu philosophy. They discover a lesson of worldwide brotherhood and harmony and take oath to follow the teachings of Hinduism in their daily life. There are some other worth-seeing places in the temple compound where tourist can enjoy his her leisure time.

There is a garden around the temple named Sahajanand Van, which has a lake, a waterfall, a children's park, rides and games and an herbal garden. Tourist can get fun and relax here.
