Home | Attractions Ahmedabad | Sabarmati Ashram

Founded in the year 1917 AD on the banks of River, Sabarmati Ashram also known as Gandhi Ashram or the Harijan Ashram served as the residence of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji leaded the Dandi March, on 12th March 1930 from this place. This March was a significant event in the freedom struggle of India. It was intended against repellent salt laws imposed by the British Government. The ashram faces the prison on one side and the river on the other.

As per historical tale, Bapu (Gandhiji) prefered the place because it gave him motivation to move ahead with the freedom struggle undeterred. He believed that this is the perfect place to kick start the national freedom struggle. The first movement launched from the Sabarmati Ashram was the Satyagrah of the Ahmedabad Textile Mill workers. It was followed by the Kheda Satyagrah. Namak satyagrah, which was the last campaign launched from here. Owing to the importance of Sabarmati Ashram in the National Movement, it is also referred to as the 'Satyagrah Ashram'.

Due to its historical significance, today, the ashram has become a national monument. It is a sacred place for all the people in the world who believe in Gandhians philosophy. Every year, a large number of tourists visit this place to pay their homage to the Mahatma Gandhi. There is a valuable museum inside the Ashram which preserves a priceless collection, comprising of Mahatama's correspondence, photographs and other memorabilia. It also houses a library and a memorial center. For making the Ashram more attractive to give visitors an insight into the life of Gandhiji and the national movement management also organizes sound and light shows.

Hriday Kunj, where Gandhiji actually stayed, still contains the charkha on which he used to spin cotton and it is preserved within the boundaries of the Sabarmati Ashram. Apart from this, there are many other personal possessions of Bapu, which can be viewed here. Indeed, Sabarmati Ashram is a compulsory destination to visit in Gujarat, to remember the era and its great souls who sacrificed their lives for the liberty of the country.
